The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
