Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
