The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
