A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
